From the Hymnal: All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

“Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” – Romans 10:9-10, 13

What makes someone a Christian? Is it church membership? Is it baptism? Does becoming a missionary indicate you are a Christian? Must you be a pastor to be a Christian? Surely you must be involved in your church in some way in order to be considered a Christian. It is very difficult when we look at the scope of Christians throughout history to determine what defines a Christian since there is so much variety among Christians. Some are theologians. Some are pastors. We have Christians named Martin Luther, John Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, C.H. Spurgeon, C.S. Lewis, Billy Graham, John Piper, David Platt, and a host of other leaders, pastors, and reformers. We have Christians who have died for the gospel and in the service of the gospel among unreached peoples such as, David Brainerd, Jim Eliot, Adoniram Judson, and many others. And we all know those who claim to be Christians, yet something just seems off about their life in that it doesn’t line up to Christ’s teachings. We see sin flowing from certain Christians and not as much from others. Is there any commonality among those who will truly be considered followers of Christ and sons and daughters of the living God? The answer is yes! It can be drawn from looking not at great Christian reformers, pastors, leaders, or missionaries, however, but rather at a great enemy.

The great enemy we must examine in determining what all true Christians have in common is Satan, the great deceiver. There is only one thing that Satan would refuse to do when it comes to following Jesus Christ: submit to Him and declare Him to be Lord of His life. Satan would refuse to submit to Jesus’ control over His life and obey Him for the glory of God. This is because he desires his own glory over God. He has an issue with submission to the Lordship of Christ and therefore, he cannot be a Christian. Would Satan call himself a Christian in today’s society? I believe so. Would Satan be a “good person?” Yes, I believe so. Would Satan be willing to join a church and become an active member? Without a doubt, he can definitely defame God as a local church “member.” Surely Satan would not take part in leadership would he? Of course! If he can lead and draw others from who God truly is, he will most definitely do that! Satan in fact would comply with most standards that we attribute to Christians. Satan would most definitely look like a modern Americanized Christian, in some cases. However, Satan would in no way willingly bow to King Jesus and exalt His name above every other. That would take humility. That would take a submission to Christ and an exaltation of His great name. Satan would in no way say, “Jesus is Lord” (Romans 10:9). Therefore, Satan will never be saved. He will be destroyed and through his destruction, the name of Jesus will be exalted and He will demonstrate His power and might through His Lordship.

We can clearly see from this brief examination that salvation requires God’s grace and call which is received in repentance and submission. God causes us to believe in our hearts that Jesus is who He says He is and as a result, we submit to His Lordship and confess that indeed “Jesus is Lord!” That name, Jesus! Oh, that wonderful name! How sweet it truly is! What is the mark of a true Christian? Humble submission to Jesus’ reign and Lordship. We begin to live like a true Christian when our lives are in line with His Word and will. Submit. His way is the only way and that is good since it is the only true way that leads to life. His name is above every name and one day, all will bow in submission, either in the glory of life or in defeat and destruction of death (Philippians 2:9-11). Every human being will declare Jesus Christ as Lord, either now or when it is too late. Christians submit to Him always. So, Christian, submit to His Word and obey Him regardless of your own personal thoughts or motives. He alone is Lord! All hail the power of King Jesus’ great and holy name!

Powerful lyrics. Powerful is the only adjective I can think worthy enough to describe this song. Read these lyrics and feel the submission of your heart to our good and holy King. It is truly a John 3:30 feeling. As you sing or read, feel yourself decrease in the face of this increasing Savior King. Exalt the glory of His name today!…Joyfully!

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” – Philippians 2:9-11

All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name

All hail the power of Jesus’ Name! Let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all.
Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown Him Lord of all.

Let highborn seraphs tune the lyre, and as they tune it, fall
Before His face Who tunes their choir, and crown Him Lord of all.
Before His face Who tunes their choir, and crown Him Lord of all.

Crown Him, ye morning stars of light, who fixed this floating ball; Now hail the strength of Israel’s might, and crown Him Lord of all.
Now hail the strength of Israel’s might, and crown Him Lord of all.

Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God, who from His altar call;
Extol the Stem of Jesse’s Rod, and crown Him Lord of all.
Extol the Stem of Jesse’s Rod, and crown Him Lord of all.

Ye seed of Israel’s chosen race, ye ransomed from the fall,
Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all.
Hail Him Who saves you by His grace, and crown Him Lord of all.

Hail Him, ye heirs of David’s line, whom David Lord did call,
The God incarnate, Man divine, and crown Him Lord of all,
The God incarnate, Man divine, and crown Him Lord of all.

Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget the wormwood and the gall,
Go spread your trophies at His feet, and crown Him Lord of all.
Go spread your trophies at His feet, and crown Him Lord of all.

Let every tribe and every tongue before Him prostrate fall
And shout in universal song the crowned Lord of all.
And shout in universal song the crowned Lord of all.

[// John Rippon added this verse in 1787]

O that, with yonder sacred throng, we at His feet may fall,
Join in the everlasting song, and crown Him Lord of all,
Join in the everlasting song, and crown Him Lord of all!
