“When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” – Matthew 9:36-38
This section of Scripture in Matthew’s Gospel goes straight to the heart of our prayer focus today. The team with Secret Church has set the focus on the need for more workers in Somalia. It is inevitable that any missions work done in nations such as Somalia will be met with harsh resistance and there will be many hardships, probable suffering, and possible death. In areas that are so opposed to Christianity and the gospel of Jesus Christ, it can be expected that difficulties and hardships are inevitable. They will occur. With our focus on the horn of Africa, Somalia is a nation that has always been hostile to the gospel and the missionaries there have been met with multiple dangers and restrictions. However, in 1972 all mission work was forced to cease by the new regime. Doors have been closed to this nation as far as missionary agencies are concerned. Because of this, there is a desperate and dire need for prayer. Just as Jesus looked out on the crowds and had compassion on them because of their suffering and helplessness, we must open our eyes to the situation in Somalia. There is great physical and spiritual danger among these people. The harvest is plentiful in Somalia with great physical and spiritual poverty with obviously few laborers with the outlawing of mission agencies. Therefore, as Christ-followers, we must pray earnestly to the Lord of this harvest to send out laborers into this harvest of His. These people were all created by God in His perfect image. We must faithfully and humbly take the gospel of Jesus Christ to them so they may return to the Father by way of faith in Jesus Christ. In your quiet time today, pray for workers to be sent to Somalia so that the liberating and redeeming gospel of Jesus Christ can be spread and proclaimed. Remember: Jesus doesn’t need us, but we all desperately need Him. Praise God today for His grace and Christ’s faithful obedience, which has justified us before Him, and ask Him to send workers into His harvest in Somalia to take the message of this grace to them.
