The author of this text examines this truth by questioning, “An excellent wife who can find?” (Proverbs 31:10) This is not to say that the majority of women are corrupt or that there are no godly women at all implying that the subsequent verses are just a kind of hopeful wish for such a woman to exist. The reality is that it is a rarity in the sense of a rare, “precious jewel” when an “excellent wife” is found. The author considers such an excellent wife to be “far more precious than jewels.” An excellent wife is truly the “crown of her husband” (Proverbs 12:4). This is beautiful imagery that is such a realistic description. The Hebrew word translated “excellent wife” has elsewhere been translated “worthy woman” (Ruth 3:11). How true! An excellent wife is indeed a worthy woman! This does not spell doom and gloom for the majority of women at all. On the contrary, it only boasts in the finding of such an excellent wife and breeds encouragement for young women to pursue such excellence. This also leads to the notion that this rare excellence can only be found in God by submitting to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and trusting in the sovereignty of the Father along with depending on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Only God can create such excellence in any person and for a woman to exhibit the excellence that surpasses the preciousness of jewels must be from the Lord. This also shows that God has a desire to make something beautiful and precious out of sinful people. Any man with such a godly wife should be ever grateful to the Father for this gift of excellence. While a man obviously seeks and finds a wife, the blessings of a marriage between an excellent, worthy woman and a godly man can only be divine governance from a God who sees that it is not good that man should be alone but rather good that man find a wife (Prov. 18:22; Gen. 2:18). We seek and God provides. It is clear that such an excellent and worthy wife is most definitely and solely from the Lord (Prov. 19:14). This is a blend of human action and divine sovereignty.
Young women, as you seek to embody godly characteristics and qualities that this ideal wife displays in Proverbs 31, you must first realize that this type of godly character only comes from God. Through the salvation, righteousness, and sanctification found in Jesus Christ, all of these subsequent godly qualities are possible to have. If you are looking anywhere but to God for godliness and righteousness, you are misled. In your desires to become an excellent wife and godly woman, realize that this is only possible by the grace, love, guidance, and sovereignty of God. In His grace and by faith in the perfect life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, you can become a beautiful, rare, precious jewel, set apart from the ungodliness of the women of this world. If you want a godly husband, pray that God would transform you into an excellent, godly wife. Be wise and seek righteousness only found in God. By doing so, you will become a precious jewel that is more than attractive to godly men.
By His Grace,
