Secret Church 2012: Why Should I Take Part?

It is now the time of year that my fiancé and I have been anticipating for months now. It is time to order the Secret Church simulcast. So far in both of our lives, there has been no single event that has convicted our hearts and strengthened our joy in God more than Secret Church. Last November, Erica and I, along with four of our friends gathered together in the living room of Erica’s home and worshipped, read, prayed, gave, and listened to the teachings of the Bible from Dr. David Platt as he sat on a stool in the church that he pastors (The Church at Brook Hills in Birmingham, AL). We were connected through Brook Hills’ partnership with Lifeway via simulcast. The idea behind Secret Church is to identify with the countless millions who are unable to freely meet and gather for worship and the teaching of God’s Word. These oppressed and persecuted peoples choose to meet in secret in their own homes. At the risk of being discovered, they faithfully worship their Savior and seek Him in the Bible. Jesus Christ is worth the risk of discovery and persecution to them.

After noticing this trend and actually taking part in teaching two twelve hour Bible study sessions in an underground secret church, Dr. Platt returned to the states determined to bring back this same passion and desire to worship and learn more about God. Secret Church is an event that is held twice each year with the intent of doing just that. I can tell you from experience, it works! After taking part in a six hour Bible study, worship, and prayer time, I and the rest of my friends were compelled to take this same desire back to our university and into our own lives. I feel confident in saying that each of us has been given a new desire to worship and learn more about God even more fervently than we had before. Truthfully, God works through Secret Church. I feel that He does because the motives behind it are aligned directly with His will revealed through Scripture. The goal is to give to support our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world, pray for them, and take what we learned from God’s Word at Secret Church back to our homes and communities to more effectively disciple others. I know that since November, there have been four people to trust in Christ for salvation just from our group of friends. The impacts of this event are enormous and I believe this is primarily due to the overwhelming desire for all those involved for the glory of God to be known and spread throughout our world. If this is your desire as well, I definitely encourage you to take part in this great event.

Below I will include a link that will direct you to the Secret Church Simulcast information page. This event is very affordable (approximately $7/person) and every dime that you give as an offering during Secret Church is given directly to the persecuted church. If you are seeking to grow closer to God as well as with your Christian brothers and sisters, I strongly encourage you to take part in this simulcast event. With an open heart and eager attitude, God will change your life through Secret Church. Take a few days to pray about hosting a Secret Church simulcast event in your home for a few of your friends or you may even want to suggest to your pastor the idea of hosting the event at the church for a larger group of people. Either way, it is most definitely worth the time and money to take part in Secret Church. Not only will you grow closer in your relationship with God but you will also grow closer in relationship with your brothers and sisters in Christ that take part in this event with you. I will pray that each of you will take part in this event and I ask that even if you choose not to, you would pray for the small group I lead as we once again take part in this amazing event!

Secret Church: Good Friday, April 6, 2012 6pm-midnight (central time)

The Topic:

“The Cross and Suffering”

Suffering is a sobering reality in a fallen world. Followers of Christ are not immune to adversity and affliction. On the contrary, there is a real sense in which following Christ means that trials and tribulations are more likely to come our way. As a result, whether walking through sickness, sorrow, pain, or persecution, the questions abound: Why am I suffering? Where is God when I suffer? How can I suffer well? When will my suffering end? How can God be good and allow such evil in the world? How can God be gracious and ordain such suffering in my life? During this Secret Church on Good Friday, we will explore these extremely profound yet deeply personal questions through the lens of Christ’s sufferings on the cross. In the process, we will come to a surprising discovery of how the gospel strengthens, sustains, supports, and ultimately satisfies us in the middle of suffering.

By His Grace,

Mathew Gilbert

  1. Hey Matt –

Thank you for this post endorsing Secret Church. We would like to make one. small, clarification concerning the simulcast fees. One hundred percent of the offering taken at Secret Church goes to support the persecuted church.

The registration fees for the simulcast go toward covering the cost the event. The charge is nominal – approximately $7 per person for a group of 7- and goes toward simulcasting the event and the 100+ page study guide provided to participants.

    Thanks again –
